If your best friend becomes your boyfriend, does it become awkward after that?

I was new to school 'X' this year. I didnt make any friends except for 1 guy friend. He's really nice but he sure is a ladies' man. We hang out every day. He's like my only friend. He's really cute and funny. He's popular at school and he is my best friend now. We sit alone at lunch, call each other, work on homework together, run together in p.e cl, talk to each other all the time, and have 1/2 of our cles together. He makes fun of me and is mean to me sometimes but playfully. (He's a guy you know)I really like him and I want to become more than friends. Even though he told me he likes someone else, ( we tell each other everything) I think I have a chance. We hug each other every day (un-awkwardly) and its an amazing sensation. I love it.(not trying to sound like a tramp here) I haven't told him yet. Its not because I'm afraid he wont like me back, but I'm afraid if we become bf/gf, things will be different. WAY DIFFERENT.
