Why would a guy do this?

My guy friend who stays out of state has a gf, but he came into town to spend his birthday with me (4day weekend)...I like him obviously, we are friends, but trying to really get an understanding behind his actions. I just think it's strange for a guy to not spend his birthday with his woman, but rather his female "friend"! hmmmm.....
