If Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas, and as we know today, Santa is probably nothing like St. Nicholas...?

Then how can we know that the way Jesus is depicted today is accurate of how Jesus really was? I doubt Jesus would adovate guns, attend a megachurch and vote Republican. I mean, seriously, how warped has Jesus' Christianity gotten?
